Vehicle Identification Number - VIN

Ever wonder what that 17 character series of numbers and letters on your car means. It must be important since its on all of your cars paperwork and your insurance agent always wants it. Below we will show you how to decode your cars VIN or Vehicle Identification Number.

Character 1: Country of Origin:
1 or 4 = USA, 2 = Canada, 3 = Mexico, J = Japan, S = England, W = Germany, Etc

Character 2: Manufacturer:
A = Audi, F = Ford, G = General Motors, H = Honda, 1 = Chevrolet, Etc

Character 3: Vehicle Type

Character 4 to 8: Vehicle Features
Body type, engine size, model, etc, etc.

Character 9 : Check Digit
No meaning

Character 10 : Model Year
Year built.

Character 11 : Assembly Plant
Where the vehicle was built.

Character 12 to 17 : Vehicle Production Number
What number your vehicle is in the build sequence. 1st off the line, 1000th off the line, etc.
