What To Do After An Accident
A car accident can be a traumatic experience.
Here are some things you should do after a car accident.
At The Accident Scene
Check For Injuries
The first thing you should do in the event of an accident is
check for injuries. Make sure that everyone is okay. If you have any
doubts, call for medical help. Better safe than sorry.
Call the Police
They will advise you on whether you should move the vehicles or
leave them in place. They will also document the accident and get
information from all parties. Do not assume responsibility for an
accident. Leave that decision up to the police officer and to your
insurer.
Exchange Information
Get the names of all parties involved in the accident. Exchange
insurance cards and make sure that their insurance is valid. Write down
the names and get the phone numbers of witnesses. Get the responding
police officers name.
Take Pictures
You should always keep a digital camera or disposable camera in
your vehicle. A picture is worth a thousand words. It will keep the other
driver from claiming more damage to their vehicle.
After Leaving The Accident
Call Your Insurer
Call your auto insurer as soon as possible after an accident.
Most of the time this will mean calling your agent. Check your insurance
card for a number to call.
Attorneys
In most cases you will not need an attorney. If you are
seriously injured however, you might want an attorney to be sure that you
receive a fair settlement.
Fixing Your
Automobile
Your insurance agent cannot make you use their preferred body shop. You
have the right to have your car repaired at the shop of your choosing.
Insurers usually make deals with body shops getting them discounts on
repairs. Their shop may not necessarily be the best for your vehicle.
